'' সলোৎসর নৈরাশ্যের একমাত্র চিহ্ন দেখা গেল ঘরময় তার চকিত দৃষ্টির মধ্যে, যেন তার খুব আশা হয় হেগেন নয়ত সনি তার পক্ষালম্বন করে কিছু বলুক । তারপর সলোৎস বললো , "আপনি কি আপনার বিশ লক্ষ্যের নিরাপত্তা সম্বন্ধে চিন্তিত ?"

ডনের মুখে শীতল হাসি , "না।"
সলোৎস আরেকবার চেষ্টা করে দেখল , "টাটাগ্লিয়া পরিবার আপনার টাকারও গ্যারান্টি দিবে ।"

ঠিক এই সময় সনি করলিয়নি বিবেচনা এবং পদ্ধতিতে অমার্জনীয় একটি ভুল করে বসল ।ব্যগ্রভাবে বললো সে , "টাটাগ্লিয়া পরিবার আমাদের কাছ থেকে কোন পার্সেন্টেজ না নিয়েই আমাদের বিনিয়োগ ফেরত দেবার জামিন হবে ?"

এই কথায় হেগেন একেবারে স্তম্ভীত । সে লক্ষ্য করলো ডন বরফের মত ঠান্ডা , আক্রোশপূর্ণ চোখে বড় ছেলের দিকে চাইলেন ,আর সে তো অবুজ ক্ষোভে জমে কাঠ । সলোৎসার চোখ আরেকবার চঞ্চল হয়ে উঠল , এবার সন্তোষে । ডনের কেল্লার দেয়ালে ফাটল দেখছে সে । শেষে যখন ডন কথা বললেন ,তার কন্ঠস্বরে বিদায়ের ইঙ্গিত শোনা গেল । তিনি বললেন, "যাদের বয়স কম , তাদের লোভ বেশি ।আজকাল তাদের কোন ভদ্রতাজ্ঞানও নেই । বড়দের কথায় বাধা দেয় । নাক গলায় । কিন্তু আমার ছেলেমেয়েদের জন্য আমার কেমন একটা আবেগময় দুর্বলতা আছে , তাই অনেক বেশি আদর দিয়ে ফেলেছি । সে তো দেখতেই পেলেন । সিনিয়র সলোৎসা ,আমার না'টা পাকা কথা । তবু এটুকু বলতে দিন , এই ব্যবসায় আপনার প্রচুর সাফল্য কামনা করি । এর সঙ্গে আমার নিজের ব্যবসার কোন বিরোধ নেই । আপনাকে নিরাশ করতে হল বলে আমি দুঃখিত ।"

The only sign of Sollozzo’s disappointment was a quick flickering of his eyes around the room, as if he hoped Hagen or Sonny would speak in his support. Then he said, “Are you worried about security for your two million?”

The Don smiled coldly. “No,” he said.
Sollozzo tried again. “The Tattaglia Family will guarantee your investment also.”

It was then that Sonny Corleone made an unforgivable error in judgment and procedure. He said eagerly, “The Tattaglia Family guarantees the return of our investment without any percentage from us?”

Hagen was horrified at this break. He saw the Don turn cold, malevolent eyes on his eldest son, who froze in uncomprehending dismay. Sollozzo’s eyes flickered again but this time with satisfaction. He had discovered a chink in the Don’s fortress. When the Don spoke his voice held a dismissal. “Young people are greedy,” he said. “And today they have no manners. They interrupt their elders. They meddle. But I have a sentimental weakness for my children and I have spoiled them. As you see. Signor Sollozzo, my no is final. Let me say that I myself wish you good fortune in your business. It has no conflict with my own. I’m sorry that I had to disappoint you.”
